[기억에 남는 영화 장면] 영화 '르네상스 맨'의 St. Crispin's Day Speech 부분

'르네상스 맨'은 오래 전에 보았던 영화이다. 시간이 꽤 지났음에도 불구하고 이 영화에서 잊혀지지 않는 부분은, 영화의 주요 인물 중 한명인 베니테즈(Benitez)가 훈련 중에 셰익스피어의 작품 '헨리 5세'에 나오는 St. Crispin's Day Speech를 암송하는 장면이다.

군인에게 셰익스피어 공부는 의미가 없다고 생각하는 훈련지휘관 카스 상사는, 주인공 빌이 셰익스피어를 가르치고 있는 훈련생들이 시험을 보지 못하게 야간 훈련을 실시하면서, 심지어 그 공부가 군인의 본분과 상관 없음을 보여주려는 듯이 훈련생 베니테즈에게 배운 것을 말하라고 시키는 장면이다. 이 장면이 인상적인 이유는 베니테즈가 셰익스피어의 구절을 잘 암송했기 때문만은 아니다. 그가 암송한 St. Crispin's Day Speech의 내용이 군인으로 처음 시작하는 주인공들의 상황과도 잘 맞아 보이기도 하고, 문학이 당장 실용적이지 않아 보일지라도 실제로는 많은 사람들에게 큰 정서적 영향을 줄 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 것 같기 때문이기도 하다. 

이 부분에서 나오는 St. Crispin's Day Speech는 아래와 같은 부분이다. 내용을 이 영화로 알게 되었는데, 셰익스피어의 문학이 여러 모로 대단하다는 생각이 든다.

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian:’
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.’
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,

What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
